About Chef Rateb Aburas
Rateb Aburas grew up in Kansas City, MO. His mother is Canadian and his father is Palestinian, from an early age he was exposed to a variety of food, ingredients, and flavors. Since the age of 12 Aburas has been working in a kitchen as his father owned a Middle Eastern restaurant. His culinary training includes an Associate of Arts (A.A) in Culinary Arts / Food & Beverage Management form Johnson County Community College, and his work experience as a cook, banquet chef, and executive sous chef. Aburas has traveled extensively across the US and the Middle East, which he attributes to his passion for the many cuisines he’s encountered.
Aburas joined Surety Hotel and Mulberry Street Tavern in early 2022 from sister property Hotel Haya in Tampa, Florida. Prior to Hotel Haya, Aburas was with Aparium Hotel Group’s Crossroads Hotel in Kansas City. Not only is Aburas incorporating his own spin on the menu at Mulberry Street Tavern by ways of his middle eastern heritage, but new menu items will also reflect his experiences working and traveling to places that include Chicago, New Orleans, Tampa, Kuwait, Jordan, and Palestine.
When not cooking or talking about food, Aburas enjoys biking, and fishing with friends and has recently discovered his love for gardening. When he’s not at Mulberry Street Tavern he enjoys exploring the diverse Des Moines restaurant scene.

The meal will feature local products sold at the DUG FarmStand. Enjoy food, and drink, with friends & family while experiencing our sustainable urban farm.
The festivities begin at 5:00 PM (CDT) with social time to drink and meet others. At 5:30 owners Jenny & Eric will give a farm tour, discuss what is growing, and answer any questions you may have about the farm.
Dinner will be served at 6:30 PM outside in the DUG green space.
NEW this season - we are selling tickets by the seat rather than the table. We also will not be providing alcohol, but you are more than welcome to bring your own!
